Emus
The emu is Australia’s tallest bird, with an average height of around 2m and weight of 55 kg. Although it can’t fly, it is a strong swimmer, and can run up to 48 km/h. They are omnivores, eating both animals (lizards, insects, rodents) and plants (flowers, fruits, seeds, shoots). Because of their ability to store fat, they can go without food for extended periods of time. They can live for 5-10 years in the wild in their preferred environments: scrublands, woods, grasslands and deserts. Their main threats are dingoes, eagles, dogs, cats, non-native foxes and humans.
