Great Barrier Reef
Located in Queensland on the north-east coast of Australia, the Great Barrier Reef is an incredibly beautiful natural site. It is also a massive tourist attraction, bringing in over two million visitors each year. It is the world’s largest reef system, composed of over 2,900 individual reefs. There are over 900 islands, is over 2,600km long and can be seen from space. It is home to more than 1500 species of fish, 215 species of birds and 400 types coral that could be around 20 million years old. Although it became a World Heritage site in 1981, its main threats are oil spills and climate change. It is the habitat for the large green sea turtle and the dugong - two endangered species that would be seriously affected if the reef was every majorly damaged.
